How to implement safe decontamination?

The works on the decontamination of aquifer zones contaminated by nanoparticles provide data on their persistence and the relative efficiency of decontamination. However, this type of practice would lead to an exposure for humans if water was extracted for human consumption from these aquifers.

In order to eliminate nanoparticles in the drinking water, several  filtration techniques (ultrafiltration, nanofiltration) are used. From a membrane, it’s possible to concentrate pollutants.

The magnetic separation is a promising technique to the purification of water. The pollutant molecules must be absorbed on functional groups grafted to the nanoparticle surface (iron oxide,…). Thanks to a magnetic field, the nanoparticles and their pollutants are catched. The surface functionalization must be selected as a function of target pollutants to extract.
