Food additives

Are food additives already on the market?

Anti-aggregating, flavoring, coloring agents are food additives. Some appear under nanometric shape, both main things are the SiO2 (anti-aggregatingE551) and TiO2 (coloring agent, E171).

According to the Directive 89/107/EEC, only additives (sweetening, coloring agents, preservatives, etc.) can be used.

At European level, the additives which may be used in the foodstuffs are subject to regulation. To use them, it is necessary to obtain a national or a european marketing autorisation. Based on a risk assessment, this authorization is delivered by the Anses (“Agence nationale de sécurité sanitaire de l’alimentation, de l’environnement et du travail”) in France and by the EFSA (“European Food Safety Authority”)  in Europe. Following autorisation, the additif is registered on the official lists and is subjected to precise conditions of use.
